Jenny Martin11 December 2006 – 2 February 2007Illusion and reality, memory and fact are associations fundamental to Jenny Martin's painting and printmaking. Artefacts: painting; sculpture; jewellery; liturgical objects inspire her and acquire new significance and context in her work through their position and juxtaposition. She chooses the objects and images initially because she responds instinctively to their colour and aesthetic qualities. However, she is also concerned with their meaning; past significance or use, or a kind of universal significance. She is, for example, interested in how a garden can be a symbol of life in ancient and modern times, how it represents the imposing of man’s order on unruly nature, or how it can be read as a document for the way in which a society lived, what they ate and what they valued. The images are carefully chosen, but once in her paintings, they become hers: changed and manipulated, objects are moved from one location to another, colour and atmosphere altered. Jenny graduated from Edinburgh University and Edinburgh College of Art in 1996 with an MA(Hons) in Fine Art, before going on to undertake a two-year postgraduate MFA in Painting. She has won several awards for her painting including a John Kinross Scholarship, allowing her to study for three months in Florence, the Frank Herring Award at the Royal Institute in Painters in Watercolour in the Mall Galleries in London and was a prizewinner in the prestigious Scottish Aspect Prize. She is also known for her work as a printmaker, winning many awards in the medium, including the University of Wales, Aberystwyth Print Prize, the Fenton Arts Trust Award and the Russell Trust Award. Jenny has exhibited widely throughout Britain and abroad, taking part in group shows in Edinburgh and London. She had her first one-person exhibition since leaving college at Ewan Mundy Fine Art, Glasgow in 2004. She holds Professional Membership and serves on the Council of Visual Art Scotland. Her forthcoming exhibitions include being Invited Artist at the Scottish Society of Architect Artists in September 2005, the Aspect Prize Winners’ Exhibition at the Adam Gallery, Cork Street, London in January 2006, and this exhibition of screenprints and paintings at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth, in December 2006.
