Mutations: Six Women Artists from SardiniaWorks by Rossana D'Alessandro, Caterine Lai, Anna Marceddu, Maria Spissu Nilson, Anna Maria Pillosu and Gabriella Viana19 April – 14 May 1999 An exhibition of 50 paintings, prints, drawings, ceramics and photographs organised by Prof. Alistair Crawford at the School of Art and Dr Franco Staffa, President, Associazione Culturale, Italia-Inghilterra, Cagliari, Sardinia, Italy. The artists have taken as their theme the effect of global standardisation on Sardinian culture and how their culture has had to adapt or mutate to survive. In this respect Sardinia and Wales have much in common: a past marked by foreign domination, a present characterised by abandoned mines and the modernisation of agriculture and a strong desire for greater autonomy from central government and high hopes in the European Union. As peripheral regions of Europe both are proud of their language and culture. The six women artists began meeting a year ago to produce a group exhibition addressing this theme. Despite the serious theme the works themselves are both exuberant and contemplative. They include large colour photographic montages by Anna Mareddu, mixed media drawings about the Sardinian language by Maria Spissu Nilson, ceramic plaques by Caterina Lai and very large collaged, mixed media works by Anna Maria Pillosu. This is a unique opportunity to see the work of these artists This exhibition is the continuation of co-operation with the School of Art of the University of Wales at Aberystwyth which started six years ago and which we hope will continue over into the next millennium.
