Ross Martin / Thomas Michael Harrison31 March 2003 – 16 May 2003Ross Martin was an undergraduate student at the School of Art in Aberystwyth, 1993-1996. He is now a highly motivated, professional artist dedicated to the development of contemporary painting and design. His work is an investigation of pure abstraction; it explores colour’s ability to control form. It celebrates the sensuous, seductive, vital and electrifying nature of colour coupled with the beauty and unfaltering subtleties of pure line. It contains no direct reference to the real world but does suggest a world governed by physical laws, and as he describes it, ‘a world where colour takes form by force’. Since leaving Aberystwyth he has staged numerous solo exhibitions and undertaken several corporate commissions. Since completing his postgraduate studies at the School of Art in 1994, Thomas Michael Harrison has worked full time yet continued to paint and exhibit regularly. As an artist, he focuses on the abstract qualities of light and form, and aims to produce high-quality, well-observed still life, portrait and figure compositions. Recent black and white figurative etchings which will feature in the exhibition; the medium allowing him to work with a restricted palette that he finds consolidates the drawing and gives an expressive edge. Even when a student his work was exhibited at the American Council for the Arts, New York and since graduating he has been awarded several prestigious prizes whilst exhibiting in solo and group shows. In recent years his work has been seen at Manchester City Art Gallery, the Royal West of England Academy and the Royal Society of Painters in Oil at the Mall Galleries, London.
