Alexander Adams: Works on Paper7 February 2004 – 8 April 2005The first solo exhibition in Aberystwyth by the Wales-based artist Alexander Adams included work on paper dating from 1994 to 2004. All works were in black and white; the artist has used no other colours since 1994. This was the third stage of its nationwide tour and a unique opportunity to see the works collected together for the first time. They ranged from drawings in charcoal, pencil and ink wash to watercolours and gouache paintings (mainly landscapes with snow). Also on show were a selection of prints which included etchings from the artist’s days at Goldsmiths College, recent linocuts on pre-printed paper and a screenprint produced especially for this show. The exhibition toured over two years and was accompanied by a 48-page catalogue with 41 illustrations, which included an essay written by the distinguished art critic Edward Lucie-Smith. Adams studied at Wrexham Art College (1991-2) and at Goldsmiths College, London (1992-5). Since leaving college he has exhibited widely around the UK and abroad. He has shown his work in commercial galleries in London and public venues around the UK, mainly in Wales. Solo shows have been in Ruthin (1996), Denbigh (1998), Wrexham (2002), Mold (2003-4) and Hawarden (2004). One of his shows in London brought him to the attention of the entertainer Paul O’Grady (who performs as Lily Savage) who purchased one of Adams’s large oil paintings. His work has also been acquired by Michael Barrymore, the critic Emmanuel Cooper and the publisher John Calder. Adams’s work is also in the permanent collections of museums in Moscow and Wrexham. The Aberystwyth solo show coincided with a one-off solo exhibition of paintings Alexander Adams: Tree Paintings at Gwynedd Museum, Bangor, 15 January – 5 March 2005. The conjunction of these shows provided an opportunity to view the full range of the artist’s work, from small drawings and prints to very recent large oil paintings.
