Gwilym Prichard: Travels Abroad

25 June – 21 Setember 2001

Gwilym Prichard was born in Llanystumdwy, near Criccieth in 1931, trained at Birmingham School of Art and is married to the painter Claudia Williams. They lived in Wales until 1984 and now live in the medieval town of Rochefort-en-Terre in Brittany. Despite their self-imposed exile, both artists have exhibited widely in Britain, in Paris and Amsterdam, and have staged numerous group and solo exhibitions in Wales. Prichard’s paintings of the landscape of Brittany and Provence, Italy, Greece and Tunisia are more than a response to the experience of landscape or feelings evoked by the place, they are a celebration of the media itself. Prichard has learnt to appreciate and exploit the accidental, to manipulate the paint surface and tease out the subject that is in his mind. Sgraffito and surface attrition are used to reveal successive layers of under painting and capture the essential characteristics of the landscape, or ‘the bones beneath the land’ as Ceri Richards once observed of his paintings. This exhibition has been arranged as precursor to the artist’s retrospective exhibition at the National Library of Wales in October 2001. All the works in the exhibition will be available for sale.
