1066 and All That: Recent Acquisitions from the School of Art Collection 1999–2001

25 June – 21 Setember 2001

A General Museum was founded at the University in 1876 and in 1920 the Art and Crafts Museum was established with an endowment from Gwendoline and Margaret Davies of Gregynog. Today its successor, the School of Art Gallery & Museum, continues to collect, document and preserve objects of educational and cultural value that are useful in teaching and research and enrich student experience by studying historical and contemporary works of art at first hand. The Museum develops its holdings to be representative of the highest achievements of contemporary Welsh, British and international Graphic Art and Studio Ceramics. The Collections are not only unique in Wales but of international importance. The School of Art Museum acquires by gift, bequest, purchase or loan items associated with its principal collections.

This exhibition showcases acquisitions in the Graphic Art Collection made by Robert Meyrick since he was appointed Keeper of Art in 1999; the most recent purchase being Christine Penn’s impressive linocut, 1066. Included in the exhibition are prints, drawings and watercolours by: Michael Ayrton (2), Robert Ball (3), Roderic Barrett (2), Bernard Cheese (3), John Copley (1), Paul Croft (2), Amanda Faulkner (2), Clifford Fishwick (2), Evelyn Gibbs (9), David Gentleman (1), Rigby Graham (7), Derrick Greaves (7), Robert Greetham (2), Gertrude Hermes (3), Edgar Holloway (2), Peter Howson (1), Edward Bouverie Hoyton (10), Blair Hughes-Stanton (1), John Keane (1), Julius Komjati (1), Erich Lessing (3), Mortimer Menpes (2), Christine Penn (5), Rembrandt van Rijn (1), Bernard Rice (3), Eric Taylor (2), and Keith Vaughan (1).
