Colin Jones (1928–1967) trained at Newport and Cardiff Colleges of Art and taught at a number of grammar schools before he was made H. M. Inspector (Art) for Wales in 1963. He exhibited at the Royal Society of Portrait Painters from 1957 until his early death, the result of injuries sustained falling from a ladder.

This first retrospective exhibition of Jones' work comprised significant loans from the National Museum of Wales and other public collections as well as from private collections throughout the UK. The exhibition was been curated by Professor Tony Curtis of the University of Glamorgan.

The Dancing Dress, illustrated above, was presented to the University of Wales, Aberystwyth by the Contemporary Art Society for Wales in 1955; it was purchased by Miss Margaret Davies of Gregynog for the Society for which she was an active founder member.
