Sisters Select: Gwendoline and Margaret Davies of Gregynog, Works on Paper from their Bequests to the Nation

19 March – 18 May 2001

Miss Gwen and Miss ‘Daisy’, grand-daughters of David Davies of Llandinam who built Barry Docks and revolutionised the Welsh coal industry, were spinster sisters, brought up as strict Methodists in rural Wales, and became two of the wealthiest unmarried women in Britain. Their collections of French Impressionist and Post-Impressionist paintings in Cardiff are internationally renowned, but their watercolours and drawings are little known and here they are exhibited together for the first time.

The sisters’ collecting was years ahead of its time and internationally renowned European artists are represented in this show: William Blake, Paul Cezanne, George Clausen, Honore Daumier, Eric Gill, Augustus John, Oskar Kokoschka, Camille Pissarro, Pierre Puvis de Chevannes, Stanley Spencer, J. M. W. Turner et al. The exhibition was organised by the National Museum and Gallery of Wales with additional works on loan from UWA School of Art. A series of public lectures and workshops will be arranged by the School of Art throughout the duration of this very special exhibition.
