Display artist/maker:

Paul Astbury

Born: 1945, UK, England, Cheshire, Oakhanger

Ceramicist and sculptor. In 1963, aged 15, Astbury was admitted to Burslem College of Art School for a pre-diploma course leading to Art and Design. He had specialised in drawing and painting, though he discovered a fondness for working with ceramics and was supported by the school principal, Reginald Marlow, who had himself been a ceramics graduate at the Royal College of Art under William Staite Murray.

In 1965, Astbury was invited to join the BA programme at Stoke-on-Trent College of Art by the Head of Fine Art, Colin Melbourne. This was followed by study at the Royal College of Art from 1968-71.

Astbury’s original interests were in press-moulded clay and assembly combined with other media, creating bizarre sculptural forms. His more recent work deals with the concept of ‘transition’, where slip cast, unfired, wet clay objects in enclosed spaces build up condensation and merge or interact with their surroundings over time.
