The poisoned, handcuffed Demetrius is brought before a robed elder by two soldiers who execute him by strangulation, pulling a rope around his neck. The soldiers wear plumed helmets and tunics and carry swords. In the background spectators observe from a distance beneath two classical arches which have coffering and are supported in the centre by two rows of columns
