Born: 1817, UK, England, London   Died: 1864, London

Illustrator, cartoonist and caricaturist. Son of a coffee house owner. He was educated at Charterhouse, alongside his life-long friend William MakepeaceThackeray (1811-1863), before studying medicine at St Bartholomew's Hospital from 1833. He abandoned his medical studies to become an illustrator publishing his work in the 'London Magazine' in 1840 and for 'Punch' between 1841 and 1864. 'Punch' published over 3600 of his drawings and cartoons some of which, particularly between 1842 and 1845, were critical of society's attitudes to poverty. He was also a prolific book illustrator with publications including Charles Dickens's 'A Christmas Carol' and R.H.Barham's 'The Ingoldsby Legends'
