Part of the third edition of 'Dyfed Landscapes' which includes four etchings (PR951, PR952, PR953 and PR954). The second edition of 'Dyfed Landscapes' is printed without the poems. The poem 'Envoi' was written by the Rev. Professor W. Moelwyn Merchant (1913-1997), a poet, sculptor, academic and Canon at Salisbury Cathedral, in response to the four etchings created by Crawford for 'Dyfed Landscapes'
A three verse poem by Moelwyn Merchant. No imagery, just the following text; ENVOI THE SCALE WAS ELEMENTAL,/EARTH AND WATER CONFINED,/COMPRESSED BY AIR/TO SCULPTED FISSURES/FASHIONED IN THE MILD ROCKS. DEATH STAYS MUTE, PATHOS/DWARFED TO A HIEROGLYPH;/YET THAT SKULL, A CAVERN/FOR BLEATING, KEENING WINDS,/LENDS TO THE CAVERNOUS HILLS/ITS OWN PROPORTIONS. OVER THE DESERTED LANDSCAPE,/SCORED BUT UNSUBDUED BY THE PLOUGH/ AND ETCHED BY WAYWARD BLACKTHORN,/THE DOVE-CLOUD BROODS.
