The inscription reads: "FERDINANDO ALVARES OF TOLE-do, duke of Alua, Lieutenant, Gouernor, and Captaine Generall of the Netherlands for Philip of Spaine., - To rule the Belgians (heretikes Suppos'de,/And rebels) I my whole designes dispos'de./No force, nor tirannous crueltie I spar'de;/Treacherie nor gold, to get their lives insnar'de./Castles and Citadells I built to save/(In spight of heavens power) my power from the grave./The Earles of Horne and Egmont I betraid;/And when none durst addresss them to their aid,/I cut in Brussells off their guiltlesse heads./Of each mans moueables even to their beds/The tenth part I extorted: Nor yet pleas'd,/The hundred part I purpos'd to have seas'd./And when my worst had all their most ingrost;/All coveting for Spaine, in the end all lost. show object description |
