Doyle's 'Bird's-Eye Views of Society'- series consists of sixteen images which were published in Cornhill Magazine between April 1861 and October 1862. Doyle wrote humorous articles to accompany each image.
Outdoor setting, possibly a park with trees forming part of the background. The people in general look middle- to upper class. In the foreground, a group is playing a game of throwing cudgels at dummies. Some are collecting the cudgels and adjust the dummies. To the right of the group are three oriental-looking gentlemen. In the middle distance, ladies and gentlemen are promenading or standing in couples or groups or are resting under a big tree. A partly is visible in the upper right corner of the image. A brass band is playing in the background. The signature of the Dalziel brothers is in the lower left corner and Doyle's initial and 'dicky' bird in the lower right corner. The creases where the images was folded are clearly defined. The paper is yellowed with age.
