Display artist/maker:

John Davies

Born: 1936, UK, England, East Anglia

Ceramicist. During his National Service in 1955, Davies worked in his spare time with the potter Kate Moss who had been a student of William Staite Murray. He had access to Moss's collection of ancient oriental pottery and also became aware of the importance of British traditions in pottery. He trained as a television cameraman, but left his job to establish a pottery in North Wales in 1966. He saw himself as a craftsman rather than an artist, following in the traditions of his grandfather and his wife's grandfather who were craftsmen in wood and metal. He uses local materials when possible, wood to fire his kiln and make ash glazes, and clay for slip, making country pottery based on traditional British wares. He works from Pwllheli, in North Wales whose landscape inspires him in the decoration of his work
