Display artist/maker:

William Daniell

Born: 1769, UK, England, Surrey, Kingston-upon-Thames    Died: 1837, London

Topographical artist. Son of a bricklayer and publican. Nephew and apprentice to the painter Thomas Daniell (1749-1840). Together they toured India and China between 1785 and 1794, a trip partly funded by a sale of their work in Calcutta in 1791. He later published his experiences in 'A Picturesque Voyage to India by way of China', 1819. He is best known for his many high quality aquatints used to illustrate 'A Voyage Around Great Britain' which he undertook between 1814 and 1825. His brother Samuel (1775-1811) also worked as a topographical artist in South Africa and Ceylon
