Ruskin Pottery

   Active: 1898-1933

Pottery. In 1898 Edward R Taylor and his son William Howson Taylor founded the Birmingham Tile and Pottery Works at Smethwick near Birmingham. It was renamed Ruskin Pottery in 1904 after John Ruskin, the Victorian writer and critic whose beliefs and ideals William HowsonTaylor shared. It functioned from 1898 to 1935 and was closed due to lack of sales during the depression of the late 1920s. Its reputation was most noted in the pre-war period. It specialised in art pottery inspired by oriental ceramics of the Sung and Ming dynasties and developed unusual coloured glazes with mottled or flambé or lustre effects mainly on porcelain.
