Display artist/maker:

Robert Fournier

Born: 1915, UK, England, Wimbledon   Died: 2008, UK, England, Wiltshire, Market Lavington

Ceramicist. In his youth Fournier excelled in art at school but did not pursue it as a career, instead joining the library service. As a pacifist he refused National Service and served a prison sentence. He trained at the Central School of Art under Dora Billington (1945-46) where he became a technical and teaching assistant.

Fournier established the Ducketts Wood Pottery in Hertfordshire in 1947 and made slipware, tin-glaze and mosaics. A year later he set up the pottery department at Goldsmiths College. He worked together with his wife Sheila Fournier, whom he married in 1961, producing repetition tableware in stoneware in London, Kent, and eventually in Lacock, Wiltshire (1971-87).

Robert and Sheila established the archive of the Craft Potters Association, which formed the basis of the Ceramic Archive at Aberystwyth. They also made a number of films with John Anderson including ‘Creatures in Clay’, ‘David Leach’, ‘Raku, English Style’. They have issued slides on pottery, both modern and ancient.

Fournier has written extensively on ceramics and has produced many books on the subject.
