Royal Doulton

   Active: 1815 to present day

Established as a producer of utilitarian salt-glazed stoneware in Lambeth in 1815 under the name Doulton & Watts. When John Watts retired in 1853 the brothers John (1793-1873) and Henry Doulton joined forces to create Doulton & Co. They began producing art pottery during the 1860s and by 1878 had purchased a factory in Burslem, Staffordshire, which made pieces ready for decoration in Lambeth. In 1901 the pottery became Royal Doulton Ltd. Many famed designers worked for the business including George Tinworth (1843-1913) and Charles Noke (1858-?) (both listed separately) with the latter introducing Kingsware and Chinese inspired Chang and Sung Wares during the early twentieth century. The Lambeth factory closed in 1956. Doulton is best known for its figurines, animals and character jugs but also produces ranges of tableware
