Royal Copenhagen

   Active: 1775 to present day

The Royal Copenhagen Porcelain Manufactory was established in 1775 by the alchemist Frantz Henrich Müller with the support of the Danish royal family. Müller developed porcelain wares with cobalt blue patterns such as 'Blue Fluted', 'Blue Flower' and 'Flora Danica'. Under the managership of G.F. Hetsch, new neo-classical designs for services became successful with European nobility. In 1868 the business was purchased by the Alumina Faience Factory and relocated to the outskirts of Copenhagen. Arnold Krog was appointed Artistic Director in 1885 and he developed new underglaze painting techniques creating wares with painted landscapes and figures. The Art Deco designs of Christian Joachim (1870-1943) were used during the 1920s, including some stoneware, and after the war Scandinavian design and functionalism predominated production. The firm merged with the Danish factory Bing & Grøndahl in 1987. The designer Bode Bertel Willum Willumsen is listed separately
