Display artist/maker:

Norah L. Godlee

Born: 1900, Australia, South Australia, Adelaide   Died: 1985

Ceramicist. Godlee studied at the School of Arts and Crafts in her native Adelaide (c1915-18) before teaching china painting from a studio in the city’s Paringa Building (1918-25). She then travelled to England to study at the Central School of Arts and Crafts (1925-28) where her pottery teacher was Dora Billington.

While in Europe Godlee travelled widely. Her travels included visits to Wedgwood and the Leach Pottery in St. Ives, Cornwall. On her return to South Australia she established the Lyme Pottery (1928-32) with the help of Mary Egerton, a friend from the Central School. Godlee ceased to pot and instead trained as a nurse, though she returned to china painting on her retirement in 1960.

Godlee produced stoneware but is mainly known for her Art Deco painted designs on china blanks which were exhibited with the Royal South Australia Society of Arts.
