Giovanni Battista Piranesi

Born: 1720, Italy, Venice   Died: 1778, Rome

Architect, archaeologist and printmaker. Son of a stone mason. Studied perspective and stage design in Venice before moving permanently to Rome in 1740 where he was taught etching by Giuseppe Vasi (1710-1782). There he produced numerous etched plates of Roman antiquities and architecture which were published in large quantities for Grand Tourists during and, under the guidance of his son Francesco (1758-1810), after his lifetime. He championed Roman architecture over Greek but only saw one of his own designs built, the Sta Maria del Priorato in Rome. His most original work was a series of etched plates of imaginary prisons entitled 'Carceri d'Invenzione'
