Wenceslaus Hollar

Born: 1607, Bohemia, Prague   Died: 1677, London

Printmaker. He left Prague c.1627 and trained under Matthaus Merian (1593-1630) in Frankfurt. Encouraged by the patronage of the Earl of Arundel, whom he met whilst working in Cologne, Hollar moved to London in 1936. There he helped introduce the medium of etching to Britain and established himself as a successful and prolific engraver. A Royalist, he moved to Antwerp in 1644 returning to London in 1652. The subjects of his prints include costumes, architecture, maritime scenes and topographical views of London, the latter being rare records of the capital before the Great Fire of 1666
