Timothy Emlyn Jones

Born: UK, Wales

Graphic artist, writer, performance artist and educationist. Jones specialises in drawing as a form of creative enquiry and inspiration. He studied at Hornsey College of Art, 1966-69 (he partook in the famous sit-in), and the Royal College of Art, 1969-71, where he was the first studio-based research student in the UK. As a young performance artist he was active in Joseph Beuy's Free International University during the 1970s and he also worked alongside Marina Abramovicz, Ian Breakwell, Jannis Kounellis and John Latham. His extensive teaching career has included senior positions at Rochdale College of Arts and Design, 1984-87, Stourbridge College of Art and Technology, 1987-89, Wolverhampton University, 1989-94, Wimbledon School of Art, 1994-99, Glasgow School of Art, 1999-2002, and, since 2003, Dean and Graduate Director of the Burren College of Art, Ireland. His large scale semi-abstract charcoal drawings explore themes such as weather, still life and landscape. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts in 1986, and a member of the European Cultural Parliament in 2011. His poetry and fiction has been published by New Departures, Penguin and Serpents Tail.
