Francis Hewlett

Born: 1930, UK, England, Bristol

Painter, ceramicist and sculptor. Studied under George Sweet (1909-1997) at the West of England College of Art, 1948-52, and under William Coldstream (1908-1987) at the Slade School of Art, 1953-54. In 1954 he won a scholarship to Paris attending the École des Beaux Arts. He taught at Falmouth School of Art, 1958-81, where he quickly became Head of Painting and in 1977 he undertook a fellowship at Gregynog Hall. He is a member of the Royal West of England Academy and is represented by Browse and Darby in London. In 2001 a retrospective exhibition of his work was held at both Plymouth Museum and Art Gallery and Falmouth Art Gallery. He paints colourful figurative works of interiors, gardens, portraits, landscapes and old theatres. His figurative ceramics from the 1970s and early 1980s, often comical, are generally underrated
