Sir Edwin Henry Landseer

Born: 1802, UK, England, London   Died: 1873, London

Painter, sculptor and printmaker. Son of the engraver John Landseer (1769-1852). Studied first under his father and then, from 1815, under Benjamin Robert Haydon (1786-1846) at the Royal Academy Schools. He soon received popular acclaim and, being Queen Victoria's favourite painter, was knighted in 1850. He painted portraits and historical subjects but is best known for his animal pictures, particularly his stag painting the 'Monarch of the Glen' of 1851. He also produced illustrations for Sir Walter Scott, whom he first met in 1824, and sculpted the lions at the base of Nelson's Column in Trafalgar Square, 1859-66. From 1840 he suffered from depression and alcoholism which led him to refuse the Presidency of the Royal Academy in 1865. His brother Thomas (1798-1880) engraved many of Landseer's paintings
