Cecil Collins

Born: 1908, UK, England, Plymouth   Died: 1989

Painter and writer. Studied at Plymouth School of Art, 1923-27, and at the Royal College of Art, 1927-31. Exhibited in the International Surrealists Exhibition of 1936. First taught at Dartington Hall in Devon, 1936-43, where he was introduced to Far Eastern philosophy by fellow tutor Mark Tobey (1890-1976). He later taught at the Central School of Art, 1951-75. He produced imaginative, spiritual figure compositions, often with autobiographical references. He also wrote 'The Vision of the Fool', 1947, and designed an altar front for Chichester Cathedral, 1973
