Furniture designer and maker. Nephew of the physicist Johannes Diderik van der Waals. Trained as a cabinet maker and worked in Brussels, Berlin and Vienna before moving to London. He was soon appointed as foreman of the Sapperton Workshops, an arts and crafts community run by Ernest Gimson and Sidney Barnsley.
