Percy Wyndham Lewis

Born: 1882, Canada, Nova Scotia, Amehurst   Died: 1957, London

Painter, writer and critic. As a child he was brought up in England where he attended Rugby School before studying at the Slade between 1898 and 1901. He spent the period 1901-08 travelling around Europe, based mainly in Paris. Worked briefly with Fry's Omega Workshops before forming the Rebel Art Centre. From the latter emerged the Vorticism movement for which Lewis was a central figure and editor of its journal 'Blast'. He worked as an Official War Artist during the First World War. He lived in North America during the early 1940s. On returning he worked as the art critic of the 'Listener', 1946-51. He painted portraits and figure studies usually in an angular style. His writings, including novels, generally reflected his right wing sympathies
