Display artist/maker:

Johann Baptist Zwecker

Born: 1814, Germany   Died: 1876

Painter and illustrator. Studied art in Düsseldorf and Frankfurt before moving to London, c.1860, where he established a studio with the wildlife artist Josef Wolf (1820-1899). He illustrated numerous children's books including Hans Christian Andersen's 'The Ice Maiden' (Richard Bentley, 1863), and 'Good Words for the Young'. A friend of George Powell, Zwecker provided the illustrations, mainly after Powell's designs, for Powell and Eirikur Magnusson's 'Legends of Iceland', (Richard Bentley, 1864-66). His magnum opus was his wildlife illustrations for Rev. John George Wood's 'Popular Natural History', published in three volumes by Routledge in 1871. He also worked on William Charles Baldwin's 'African Hunting and Adventure...' and collaborated with Durand in illustrating Samuel Baker's 'Ismailia' (Macmillan, 1874)
