Lord Frederic Leighton

Born: 1830, UK, England, Scarborough   Died: 1896, London

Painter, sculptor and illustrator. Son of a physician. Travelled with his family in early life receiving an art education at academies in Berlin, 1843, Florence, 1844, Paris, 1849, Frankfurt, 1843-44 and 1849-52, and Rome, 1852-55. He settled in London in 1859 where he was later appointed President of the Royal Academy in 1878, a post he held until his death. He painted portraits, female nudes and mythological subjects in a neo-classical style. His most famous paintings include 'Flaming June', 1895, and the huge 'Cimabue’s Celebrated Madonna is Carried in Procession through the Streets of Florence', 1855. He also sculpted bronzes and designed illustrations for George Eliot's 'Romola' in the 'Cornhill Magazine', 1862-63. He was the first artist to be awarded a baronetcy. His home at Holland Park Road, Kensington, is now the Leighton Museum
