Samuel Prout

Born: 1783, UK, England, Plymouth   Died: 1852, UK, England, London, Camberwell

Architectural painter and printmaker. Son of a naval outfitter. Father of Samuel Gillespie Prout (1822-1911), watercolourist. As a young man Prout honed his skills by drawing the buildings of rural Devon, and later of Cornwall while on a tour of the county with John Britton (1771-1857). Following a move to London in 1803, Prout funded his further studies by teaching, creating tuition books and producing marine pieces for the printseller Thomas Matthew Palser (1775-1855). Around this time Prout became one of the first artists to use lithogrpahy. A visit to Europe c. 1818 introduced Prout to the world of architectural art, and his consequent work in the genre earned him a glowing reputation - with the help of art critic and Prout's former student, John Ruskin (1819-1900).In 1829 Prout was awarded the title of 'Painter in Water-Colours in Ordinary' to King George IV, and afterwards to Queen Victoria. A large collection of his works and personal effects can be found at the Plymouth City Museum & Art Gallery.
