Evelyn May Gibbs

Born: 1905, UK, England, Liverpool   Died: 1991, Hammersmith

Painter and printmaker. Wife of the theatre director Hugh Willatt (1909-1996). Studied at Liverpool School of Art, 1922-26, and the Royal College of Art, 1926-29. In 1929 she won the Prix-de-Rome for Engraving allowing her to continue her studies at the British School at Rome, 1930-31. On returning to Britain she taught in schools and lectured in teacher training at Goldsmith's College from 1934. She was the author of 'The Teaching of Art in Schools' which was published in 1934. On the outbreak of the Second World War she moved to Nottingham where she was a key figure in the development of the 'Midland Group'. Her early work consisted of detailed prints of figure studies but the majority of her work was landscape based, often abstract, and inspired by visits to France, Italy, Wales and Gozo
