Alfred John Fairbank

Born: 1895, UK, England, Grimsby   Died: 1982, Hove, Sussex

Calligrapher. Studied at the Central School of Arts and Crafts. Founder member of the Society of Scribes and Illuminators in 1921, serving as honorary secretary between 1931 and 1933, and of the Society for Italic Handwriting in 1952. He designed the typeface Narrow Bembo in 1928. He also wrote on the subject of calligraphy with his most successful publications including 'A Handwriting Manual' (1932) and 'A Book of Scripts' (1949). The Anna Hornby Papers at the Bodleian Library include numerous letters and manuscripts by Fairbank
