William Blake

Born: 1757, UK, England, London   Died: 1827, London

Painter, illustrator, philosopher and poet. Son of a hosier. Trained as an engraver under James Basire (1730-1802), 1772-79. He then joined the Royal Academy Schools in 1779 where Blake's visionary outlook clashed with the formal teaching of Sir Joshua Reynolds (1723-1792). He worked as a commercial engraver during the 1780s and published his first book of poems, 'Poetical Sketches', in 1783. From 1787 onwards he engraved and published numerous books of his poetry, and that of other poets, utilising his own methods of colour printing. In later life his work was patronised by John Linnell (1792-1882) for whom he produced illustrations to Dante's 'Divine Comedy' and 'The Book of Job'. As a key figure of the Romantic Movement, Blake was a major inspiration to Samuel Palmer (1805-1881) and others
