John Addyman

Born: 1929, UK, England, Wallasey   Died: 2006, Wales, Haverfordwest

Painter, printmaker, ceramicist and educationalist. The son of a Cheshire leather merchant and a Welsh mother, Addyman spent the war years as an evacuee in North Wales. After the war he studied at Wallasey School of Art, 1945-49, before specialising in graphic design and illustration at the Royal College of Art, 1949-52, where his tutors included John Nash, Edward Bawden and John Minton. He first taught part-time at Swansea School of Art, 1954-55, where his work first became inspired by the geology of the Welsh coastline. A more secure teaching post followed at Colchester School of Art, 1957-63, and then at Nottingham College of Art, 1963-67, where he developed a course on ceramics for architecture. He returned to East Anglia when he joined the art history department at Essex University; as a connoisseur of the work of John Constable, he presented an Anglia Television programme on the artist in 1988. In 1989 he returned with his grown-up family to Pembrokeshire firstly to Bridell and then Narbeth where they were at the heart of a small artists' colony. Addyman worked in diverse media but he was continuously concerned with the act of drawing landscape - even his large ceramic panels based on Welsh rockscapes were a result of ‘drawing in clay’. He is perhaps best known for his large scale semi-abstract watercolours which in 1996 resulted in a prize in the Singer & Friedlander/Sunday Times Watercolour Competition.
