Francesco Bartolozzi

Born: 1727, Italy, Florence   Died: 1815, Lisbon

Painter and engraver. Son of a goldsmith. Studied at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence and in Venice under the engraver Joseph Wagner (1706-1780). He then worked in England where he was appointed Engraver to George III in 1764. He was a founder member of the Royal Academy in 1768. He developed stipple engraving in England becoming well known for his engravings of Old Master paintings. In 1802 he moved to Portugal to become Director of the National Academy in Lisbon
