John Frederick Tayler

Born: 1802, UK, England, Hertfordshire, Borehamwood   Died: 1889, London, West Hampstead

Painter and printmaker. Born into a large family of 17 children, Tayler was the son of Frances Eliza and Archdale Wilson Tayler, a country gentleman. After his father's early death, Tayler's uncle organised a public school education at Eton and Harrow but he turned away from a projected career in the clergy to study art at Sass’s Academy and the Royal Academy Schools. A short time in Paris followed where he briefly attended the studio of Horace Vernet (1789-1863) and shared a studio with Richard Parkes Bonington (1802-1828). He then visited Rome before returning to London where he soon established himself as a respected painter. Though known as a watercolourist, he also worked in oil and later received some oil painting lessons from William Powell Frith. Tayler exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1830 and 1865. He became a full member of the Old Water-Colour Society in 1834 and later served as President of the Society between 1858 and 1871. He painted landscapes, genre scenes and animal sports. As a founder member of The Etching Club, he also etched a small number of plates
