Born: 1840, France, Paris, Puteaux   Died: 1887, Paris

Painter and writer. Studied under François-Edouard Picot (1789-1868), Alexandre Abel de Pujol (1787-1861) and Félix Barrias (1822-1907). He travelled with the French Army to colonial outposts in North Africa 10 times between 1862 and 1867 providing a description of the harsh life in the deserts of Southern Algeria. He won the 2nd Prix de Rome in 1861 - the year in which he first exhibited at the Salon - and was awarded the Legion of Honour in 1871. He also wrote articles for the 'Nouvelle Revue' between 1879 and 1884, later published as 'Tableux Algérians' in 1888. An orientalist, he painted detailed naturalistic landscapes and scenes particularly in North Africa
