Oswald Birley

Born: 1880, New Zealand   Died: 1952

Painter. Educated at Harrow and Trinity College, Cambridge. Studied art at the Académie Julian in Paris before serving in the First World War. He married Rhoda Birley (1900-1980) and together they travelled to the Far East, America, Mexico and France. He worked as a society portraitist with sitters including King George's V and VI, General Eisenhower and Prime Ministers Baldwin, Atlee, Chamberlain and Sir Winston Churchill, the latter being a close friend. He lived at Charleston Manor in East Sussex
