Rembrandt van Rijn

Born: 1606, Netherlands, Leiden   Died: 1669, Netherlands, Amsterdam

Painter and printmaker. Educated at the Latin School in Lieden, but it is thought that he left the school early to be educated as an artist, at his own request. He studied art first under Jacob van Swanenburgh (1571-1638) and then under Pieter Lastman (1583-1633) between the years 1620 and 1624 or 1625. Perhaps the most famous master of the Dutch Golden Age, Rembrandt is most widely known for his portraits, self-portraits and stunning religious paintings. As his style developed Rembrandt made innovative use of light and shadow, creating bright focal spots of light and leaving vast areas cloaked in darkness. From 1628, he began to take on pupils of his own; it is estimated that Rembrandt had over fifty pupils in his lifetime. Some of his most famous works include The Night Watch, Danaë and The Storm on the Sea of Galilee
