Humphrey Spender

Born: 1910, UK, England, London, Hampstead   Died: 2005, Essex

Photographer, painter, printmaker and designer. Son of a journalist and brother of the poet Stephen Spender (1909-1995). Educated at Gresham's School, Norfolk, before studying art history at Freiburg University in Germany, 1927-28, and then architecture at the Architectural Association in London, 1928-34. He then established a photographic studio in The Strand receiving commissioned work from the 'Daily Mirror', 1935-37, and 'Picture Post', 1938-c.53. A key participant of the Mass Observation project, 1937-38, he created penetrating images documenting working class life in 'Worktown' (Bolton and Blackpool) often utilising a hidden camera. He later worked as an Official War Office Photographer during the Second World War, 1941-45. After 1949 he took up painting and textile design teaching the latter at the Royal College of Art from 1953 to 1975. He also taught at Camberwell between 1960 and 1975
