Robert Tavener

Born: 1920, UK, England, London, Hampstead   Died: 2004, , Eastbourne

Painter, printmaker and illustrator. Worked in an office before serving in the Second World War where he partook in the D Day landings at Arromanches, Normandy. At the end of the war he was able to study art with the Rhine Army in the art and design faculty of Gottingen University, 1945-46, before studying at Hornsey College of Art, 1946-50. He taught at Medway College of Art, 1951-53, St Martin's School of Art (part-time) and Eastbourne College of Art, 1953-80, where he rose to be Vice-Principal. He illustrated numerous educational books and received commissions from the B.B.C., London Transport and the General Post Office. He was a Senior Fellow of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers. He produced prints and watercolours of landscapes, architecture and seaside themes mainly with a bold application of pattern and colour
