Roderic Barrett

Born: 1920, UK, England, Colchester   Died: 2000

Painter, printmaker and illustrator. Son of an ironmonger. Studied under John Farleigh (1900-1965) at the Central School of Art and Design, 1936-40, where he later taught as a visiting lecturer, 1947-68. He also taught at the Royal Academy Schools, from 1968, and later at Manchester Victoria University. He illustrated books including Hugh Barrett's 'Early to Rise: A Suffolk Morning', Faber, 1967. He was a member of the Society of Wood Engravers, elected 1952, and a founder member of the Colchester Art Society. In 1997 he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by Essex University. He produced paintings, etchings and wood engravings often featuring clowns
