Painter and printmaker. Studied at Manchester School of Art and afterwards worked at the Atelier Colorossi in Paris. Teaching at the Central School of Art and Design, he led the first wood engraving classes to be offered at a London art school. Here he promoted the use of the white-line technique and experimented with the engraving of large blocks. He was elected a Fellow of the Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers, 1915, became a founder member of the Society of Wood Engravers, 1920, and a member of the Royal Academy, 1930, serving as the Academy's Treasurer between 1932 and 1940. Besides his wood engravings he also produced paintings, etchings, lithographs and woodcuts. His subjects tended to be European street scenes, architecture and landscapes. He was the son-in-law of the composer Edward Elgar (1857-1934)
