Joseph Hecht

Born: 1891, Poland, Lodz   Died: 1951, Paris

Printmaker. Son of a Jewish clothier. Studied at the Fine Arts Academy in Krakow, 1909-14. He lived in Norway during the First World War and travelled in Italy, 1918-19, before settling in Paris. Here he became a member of the Salon d’Automne and a founder member of the La Jeune Gravure Contemporaine. He taught engraving at the Académie Julian in Paris during the 1920s where his students included Stanley William Hayter (1901-1988) and Anthony Gross (1905-1984). During the Second World War he ceased engraving and, due to his Jewish origin, moved to the Savoy region of France where he worked as an agricultural labourer. Through the encouragement of Hayter he resumed his printmaking in 1946. He produced simple line engravings of animals, birds and landscapes
