Robert MacBryde

Born: 1913, UK, Scotland, Ayrshire, Maybole   Died: 1966, Dublin

Painter, printmaker and designer. Companion of the painter Robert Colquhoun (1914-1962). Worked for five years as an engineer in a factory before studying at Glasgow School of Art, 1932-37. He and Colquhoun then travelled to France and Italy, 1937-39, before returning to Essex. Together they ran a popular studio in Campden Hill, 1941-47, which attracted artists such as John Minton (1917-1957), Keith Vaughan (1912-1977) and Prunella Clough (1919-1999). After being evicted from their studio for drunkenness in 1947 they lived in Lewes, East Sussex, 1947-48. He produced still lifes and figure subjects but also designed the scenery for Massine's 'Donald of the Burthens' performed at Covent Garden in 1951. Alcoholism eventually claimed his life when, drunk, he was hit by a car in Dublin
