Display artist/maker:

James McBey

Born: 1883, UK, Scotland, Aberdeenshire, Newburgh   Died: 1959, Morocco

Painter and printmaker. Illegitimate son of a farmer. A self-taught artist who produced some of his earliest etchings by using his mother's mangle as a press. He worked in a bank until 1910 the year he made his first trip to Holland where he etched many scenes. During the First World War he was appointed an Official War Artist working with a camel patrol in Egypt. His etchings were highly regarded and fetched high prices during the 1920s. He settled in Morocco in the 1930s where he remained except for a period in America during the early 1940s. He produced etchings of landscapes, often with low, flat horizons, in a sketchy, economical line
