Douglas Percy Bliss

Born: 1900, India, Karachi   Died: 1984, Derby

Painter, printmaker, illustrator and art historian. Studied at Edinburgh University, 1918-22, and under Sir William Rothenstein (1872-1945) at the Royal College of Art, 1922-25. Elected a member of the Society of Wood Engravers in 1934. Taught part-time at Hornsey, 1932-40, and Blackheath, 1934-40, Schools of Art before serving in the RAF during the Second World War. He then taught briefly at Harrow School of Art, 1945-46, until his appointment as Director of Glasgow School of Art, 1946-64. He travelled widely in Europe, including Russia, and to Africa visiting Ghana five times as an art adjudicator at Kuman University. He illustrated numerous books and also wrote 'History of Wood Engraving' and 'Edward Bawden'
