William Walcot

Born: 1874, Russia, Odessa, Lustdorf   Died: 1943, Hurstpierpoint

Architectural draughtsman and printmaker. Studied architecture at the Imperial Academy of Art in St Petersburg before attending the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and Atelier Redon in Paris. He then practised as an architect for five years in Moscow where he designed the Hotel Metropole, 1898. By 1907 he had settled in London working initially for the architect Eustace Frere before becoming a freelance architectural draughtsman. His drawings were exhibited with the Fine Art Society who sponsored Walcot's trips to Venice and Rome. He produced detailed architectural etchings and watercolours but also created imaginative scenes of ancient buildings. His work was widely collected during the 1920s but after the collapse of his business due to the Second World War he committed suicide
